A comprehensive, no-cost healthcare program ensuring that government school children receive continuous preventive, promotive, and curative health services.
For many children studying in government schools, healthcare is often unaffordable or inaccessible. Parents are usually daily wage earners and uneducated. Hence, they do not understand or fail to identify the health-related issues of children.
Untreated illnesses and pre-existing conditions
Frequent absenteeism from school
Low energy, poor concentration, and reduced learning outcomes
The School Health Care Program was designed with the future of the country in mind, because healthy children learn better, stay in school longer, and grow into productive adults.
The School Health Care Program (SHP) provides complete health coverage to government school children at no cost to families. The only eligibility criterion is enrolment in a government school.
SHP ensures care for children ranging from common cold to complex surgeries, including treatment for pre-existing illnesses, making healthcare equitable, continuous, and dignified.
Health for a child is ensured at a cost of just ₹0.50 per child per day, making this model highly feasible for state governments and corporate partnerships.
As part of SHP, selected students are trained as School Health Volunteers who act as peer educators.
Regular screenings under SHP have highlighted key health challenges among school children:
Early detection allows for timely intervention and prevention of long-term complications.
The effectiveness of SHP has been nationally and internationally recognized:
Included in the Eleventh Five-Year Plan of India
Documented as a case study
Recommended for replication by member countries of the ILO
Cost-effective, replicable public health model
The School Health Care Program shows that quality healthcare for children is not only possible but also scalable and affordable[cite: 143]. The SHP program ensures that health is not a deterrent for education and therefore helps children stay in school and succeed[cite: 144].
